Summer is Here!

It’s hard to believe that we are headed towards July. It feels like just yesterday we were talking about spring turkey hunts and now the dog days of summer are upon us. July in Iowa means long days, warm nights, and endless opportunities to enjoy everything our great state has to offer outdoors.

I hope you’re all making the most of it. Whether you’re casting a line on one of Iowa’s beautiful lakes or rivers, camping at a state park, or just gathering around a bonfire with friends and family, this is the season to make those memories. There’s something truly special about summer nights under the stars after a day spent in nature, right here in Iowa.

We’re finally headed into June here in Iowa, and this issue of The Iowa Sportsman is dedicated to helping you make the most of it. In this issue we cover everything Iowan outdoorsmen and women are doing from fishing, to food plots.

We deep dive into multi-species food plots that benefit not only deer, but our birds and other wildlife too. Food plots are not just for hunters, but for just about anyone who appreciates nature. Publisher Aaron McKinney provides expert advice on creating multi-species food plots. He encourages us to support a diverse and thriving wildlife population.

Additionally in our Gun Dog corner, writer Kyle Dana gives us some tips to make a top-notch gun dog. It’s summer now, but the seasons will be opening up before you know it. On a different note, writer Kent Boucher gets into the specifics of Planting the Perfect Deer Property. Kent has spent years working with Native Warm Season Grasses and gives us some pointers on wildlife habitat.

Fishing in Iowa:

For those of you eager to hit the water, we’ve got two excellent features. Ben Leal helps you pinpoint the hottest Iowa fishing spots in his article in our Fishing in Iowa column, offering insights into where the fish are active and what they’re biting on.

Todd Reed follows that up with A guide to fishing Iowa in June. He goes over what to target this month and the best strategies for success. As well as, Targeting Muskie by Matt Eyman-Vavroch, gives us some tips on catching and pursuing the elusive muskie right here in our home state. It’s a difficult, yet very rewarding challenge to target muskie. With Father’s Day coming up, Nick Johnson shares a heartwarming fishing story, a reminder of  the special moments spent with family.

He highlights some of the best places to fish this spring, and in a separate article, he gives us some advice on his favorite tackle and lures. In our Fishing Iowa column, Ben Leal shares walleye fishing tips, tricks, and tackle for those of us targeting walleye this spring. Always be certain of your target—positively identify that tom before you take the shot, and be mindful of what’s beyond your bird. A moment of caution can make all the difference in ensuring a safe and enjoyable hunt for everyone.
