Purchasing Your Next Camper

By Jessica Graham

In 1872, the United States congress recognized the beauty and importance of the nature surrounding us and set aside land which would later be used to establish the world’s first national park, Yellowstone National Park. Since the establishment, thousands of other parks have been established for tourists and locals to enjoy the recreation and tranquility provided by nature. Iowa supports an abundance of parks ranging from the Maquoketa caves in eastern Iowa to Wabonsie State Park in the loess hills of western Iowa. One of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of the parks is to extend your stay through camping.

While picking out a camper for your vacation, you first need to consider the type of camping that is best for you and your family.

Glamper
Consumers can now camp without having to leave behind the conveniences and comfort of home. Glamping is a term to describe the modern camper, someone who wants the comfort of the most modern conveniences while camping in the peaceful setting of your choice. Campers for the glampers are modern and will keep campers connected in a comfortable atmosphere. For 2021 we are seeing new floor plans, new designs and new technology for an updated fresh camping experience. For example, Thor Motor Coaches have electric fireplaces, Wi-Fi, satellite radio and sound bars to offer some finer details of comfort while enjoying time away from home. Keystone offers some stunning interior options, particularly in their 5th wheel campers with clean lines, 3 sided fire places, and hard top countertops to create a very modern and homey feel. The interior of these campers include a plethora of options for appliances, including dishwashers to make camping a convenient experience.

Outdoorsman
In the past, adventurous families were limited to conventional toy haulers. However, several models new for 2021 offer large storage spaces for those toys without the traditional look of the toy haulers. Floor plans inclusive of these large storage spaces are included in several different models of RVs and towing trailers. Today, fishermen, bikers, and other adventurous families and couples can store equipment in large multi-use spaces. Another feature attractive to the family that loves sitting outside is the dual awnings. Keystone, for example, makes some models with 2 awnings, 16 feet and 11 feet for added outdoor comfort.

Another option for families on-the-go are truck campers and class B RVs. Truck campers allow families mobility and now are equipped with more features for comfort than ever before. For instance, the Palomino BackPack, sold by Cheyenne Camping Center in Walcott, IA, offers a very mobile camping experience. Trucks equipped with 4 wheel drive can travel virtually anywhere. Many of the 2021 truck models featured at Cheyenne Camping Center are equipped with awnings and slide outs to expand the outdoor living space.
Class B RVs offer similar mobility to truck campers. The 2021 Coachmen Galleria Sprinter and the 2021 Thor Motor Coach Tellaro Class B RVs offer the conveniences of living quarters in a smaller vehicle. There is no set up required as the large van contains the living quarters. It is truly amazing the amount of features that can fit inside the van. The Tellaro can include: a kitchen, dinette, cooking area, bathroom and shower. Thor spokesperson John Krider recommends the Class B RVs for a “quick get away”.

Working from the camper
Whether you are working from home or participating in virtual classrooms for school, campers and motorhomes are accommodating for the families who want to do so from a new environment. Many manufacturers are including flexible living spaces into their 2021 lineup to allow flexible living situations. Keystone, for instance, incorporates a Murphy bed into their Hideout model. This allows users the option to have a couch or a bed displayed, or they can fold up the bed for an instant office . The 2021 Coachmen Catalina Legacy, available at Cheyenne Camping Center, also has the option to have a private back room. The room can easily be transformed into a private yet professional work space or the futon and fold-up bunk beds can be extended to use the space as a bunk room for guests.

Other options the working camper should look for include Wi-Fi capabilities and hotspot options. Thor Motor Coach has some of these options available in select models to allow the working camper to stay connected to school and work places. Now families can enjoy working from home while camping in a new environment. After homework and occupational tasks are complete, the whole family can explore a new destination together.

For families
Several campers new for 2021 feature solar panels on the campers or motor homes to allow outdoor families to expand their camping destinations. Many camp sites, especially electric sites, fill up quickly and purchasing a camper equipped with solar power allows campers to utilize primitive camp sites. Solar power is renewable and allows you to go beyond typical campsites. Most of the new 2021 Keystone towable and RV campers are equipped with solar panels. Campers can select different levels of solar panels to fit their needs. If camping in a primitive campsite, such as Grant Park in Warren County, Iowa, solar panels will allow users to enjoy the use of some utilities while enjoying life off the grid in a private element with their families.

The Cougar OTG camper trailer and Coachman Sportscoach both allow options for solar powered outlets and additional solar panels for renewable power options. Space is important when taking family vacations. The 2021 Sportsman Coach can lodge up to 10 people. The two bathrooms and the washer and dryer is perfect to support extended stays for multiple campers. When selecting a camper for lengthy family vacations, campers should be sure to have enough sleeping areas and space to support a growing family.
