Make the Most Out of Spring Turkey Season

Turkey season in Iowa is just around the corner, and for hunters, it’s one of the best times of the year. Make sure to make the most of spring turkey season this year. The weather’s warming up, the trees are starting to bloom, and we can see some toms out and strutting. Before you head out to the woods, now’s the time to think about upgrading your gear. A few new tools or a little practice could be the key to making this season your best yet. The season may be short, but it’s full of beautiful moments, and you don’t want to miss any of them.

A Short but Sweet Season

Iowa’s turkey season isn’t long, with the first three seasons lasting just a few days, which makes it all the more special. It’s a chance to get outside and enjoy the spring weather, but it goes by quickly. The birds are active, the landscape is coming alive, and before you know it, it’s over. Every moment counts, so it’s worth taking the time to make sure your gear is working and you are prepared. Whether you’re heading out early in the morning or waiting for the late afternoon gobbles, the right equipment can make all the difference.

Time to Upgrade Your Calls

One of the most important tools for any turkey hunter is the call. We all have our favorite calls, and it might be worth adding another one to try out. Sometimes switching up your call can be all it takes to bring in a group of jakes, or spring tom.  From box calls to diaphragm calls, there’s a huge variety, and many of the newer models make it easier to mimic realistic turkey sounds. It does take some practice and skill, so watch some turkey hunting shows, Youtube, or listen to your favorite podcast to get some of these calling tips. Practice your calling before you head to the timber. It’s not just about having the right call—it’s about being able to use it effectively. Spend some time practicing your yelps, clucks, and purrs before the season starts. It’ll make you feel more confident when you’re in the field and increase your chances of getting that tom to respond.

Try Out Some New Decoys

Decoys are another key part of the turkey hunter’s toolkit, and if you haven’t updated yours in a while, it might be time to do so. Jakes get attacked and as hunters we’re pretty good about re-gluing and re-using, but take a look at your decoys. Decoys have come a long way in recent years. The new ones on the market are more lifelike and realistic than ever and can help you bring in birds. Even if you’re sticking with your old decoys, consider switching up your setup. Try adding a jake or breeding hen decoy to your spread. The more lifelike and diverse your decoys are, the better your chances of drawing in a big bird. It’s not just about the gear; it’s also about how you use it. Turkey hunting techniques have changed over the years, so if you’ve been using the same strategy for a while, maybe it’s time to switch it up. This might be the year you try turkey reaping.

Practice makes Perfect

No matter how much you upgrade your gear, practice is still the most important thing. You can have the best calls and decoys, but if you’re not comfortable with them or you haven’t put in the time to practice, it won’t matter much. Take some time before the season starts to get familiar with your new gear and work on your accuracy with your shotgun. The more comfortable and confident you feel with your equipment, the better your chances when it’s go time.

Iowa’s turkey season is one of the most beautiful times of the year, and with a short season, you want to make every day count. Whether you’re updating your calls, trying out new decoys, or experimenting with fresh hunting techniques, now’s the time to get everything in order. Practice, learn new tricks, and get ready for a season full of gobbles and memories. With the right gear and a little preparation, this could be your best turkey season yet.
