7 Ways to Make the Most of Camping
7 Ways to Make the Most of Camping
Camping in Iowa is one of the best ways to enjoy the outdoors and take a break from the busy pace of daily life. In a world where we are constantly on the go, and staring a screen, it’s good for the soul to take a break and enjoy the outdoors. Iowa has many beautiful places to set up camp and make lasting memories. Whether you enjoy roughing it in a tent, parking an RV, or staying in a cabin, every camping trip brings new adventures. The best part is that camping is about much more than sleeping outside. It is a chance to learn new skills, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy the simple things that nature has to offer. You can cook over a campfire, paddle across a calm lake, hike through scenic trails, or relax under a sky full of stars. No matter your age or experience, there is always something new to discover. The following activities will help you make the most of your next Iowa camping trip and create memories that will last for years.
Try New Campfire Recipes
Camping is the perfect time to try something new over the fire. A simple meal can taste even better when it is cooked outside. Iowa campgrounds are a great place to make foil packet meals, campfire pizza, breakfast hash, or fresh fish if you had a good day on the water. You can also roast sweet corn, bake cinnamon rolls in a cast iron pan, or make fruit cobbler in a Dutch oven. Kids love roasting hot dogs and making s’mores, but there are many other fun treats to try. While you’re gathered around the fire, tell stories, and enjoy the evening. Bring a few easy recipes and ingredients from home, and you may find a new family favorite before your trip is over.
Build a Fire with Flint and Steel or a Ferro Rod
Building a campfire without a lighter is a fun skill that every camper should try. A flint and steel or a ferro rod can help you start a fire with just a few sparks. I remember playing with one while on vacations. I got pretty good at it too. It takes practice, but it is a great way to learn outdoor skills and become more confident in camp. Iowa campgrounds often have fire rings and plenty of places to gather fallen sticks, but always follow campground rules before collecting firewood. Learning this old skill can make camping feel like a true outdoor adventure. Once the fire is burning, you can cook dinner, stay warm, and enjoy the night around the flames.
Go on a Hike
One of the best parts of camping in Iowa is getting out on the trail. Many state parks have easy hikes that lead through forests, along rivers, and over rolling hills. Every trail offers something different to see. You will be surprised on the terrain. Bring water, wear good shoes, and take your time. You do not have to hike for miles to enjoy the outdoors. Even a short walk can lead to beautiful views, quiet places, and new memories. Keep your eyes open for animal tracks, mushrooms, butterflies, and other small things that are easy to miss when you stay at camp.
Wildlife Watching
Camping gives you a chance to see animals that are not always easy to find at home. Iowa is home to many birds, deer, wild turkey, rabbits, foxes, and even river otters in some areas. Wake up early to hear songbirds or watch the woods come alive as the sun rises. Bring a pair of binoculars and a simple bird guide to help identify what you see. Stay quiet and move slowly for the best chance to spot wildlife. Remember to watch from a safe distance and never feed wild animals. The more time you spend outdoors, the more you will notice how much life surrounds every campground.
Explore Iowa by Kayak or Canoe
Many of Iowa’s best camping areas are close to lakes, rivers, and water trails. Renting or bringing a kayak or canoe lets you see these places from a whole new view. Paddle along quiet shorelines, explore hidden coves, or drift down one of Iowa’s scenic rivers. This is one of the most relaxing things for me to do. I have my kayak set up so I can fish out of it too. You may see turtles resting on logs, great blue herons standing in the shallows, or fish jumping. Always wear a life jacket and check the weather before heading out. Whether you are a beginner or have years of experience, a day on the water can become one of the best memories from your Iowa camping trip.
Spend the Day Swimming at an Iowa Beach
After a long hike or a warm afternoon around camp, nothing feels better than cooling off in the water. Admittedly, I’m not a big beach person, but once I get there it’s pretty peaceful and enjoyable. Many Iowa state parks have clean swimming beaches that are perfect for families and campers. Pack a towel, sunscreen, and plenty of water for a relaxing day by the lake. Kids can play in the sand while adults enjoy the view or float in the water. Some beaches also have nearby picnic areas where you can stop for lunch before heading back for another swim. Always follow all posted safety signs.
Stargaze and Learn New Constellations
I remember being in grade school and my dad pointed out both the Big Dipper and Little Dipper constellations. I then learned some other ones in school, and in early mornings, I still enjoy looking up and seeing the constellations out. One of the best things about camping is looking up at the night sky. Away from city lights, many Iowa campgrounds offer dark skies that make stars easier to see. Spread out a blanket, sit around the campfire, and take time to enjoy the view above. Try to find well-known constellations like the Big Dipper, Cassiopeia, Orion, or Scorpius, depending on the season. You can also use a free phone app or a star chart to help identify planets and bright stars. Watching the sky is peaceful and reminds us how big the world really is. It is a fun activity for both kids and adults, and every clear night brings a chance to discover something new. This is even more fun if you look up meteor showers. You’re more likely to see shooting stars as you gaze at the sky.
Recharge
Iowa offers countless opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Camping gives us a chance to slow down, unplug from everyday distractions, and reconnect with nature and the people around us. Every trip is different, and each campground has something unique to offer. Pack your gear, gather your family or friends, and head out to explore everything Iowa has waiting beyond the campground. Your next outdoor adventure may be closer than you think, and the memories you create will stay with you long after the campfire burns out.
