Steps for Maintaining Firearms Long-Term

As hunters hang up their gear and reflect on the memories of another successful season, it’s essential to turn our attention to the crucial task of caring for our firearms. Cleaning and storing your guns correctly is not just a matter of maintenance; it’s a responsibility that ensures the longevity and performance of your firearms. Neglecting your firearms during the off-season can result in rusting, pitting, and a decline in their overall condition. Proper cleaning and storage is essential to preserve your firearms and keep them in optimal working order, so they’re ready to serve you well when the next hunting season arrives.

Clean Your Guns

Before starting the cleaning process, always ensure your firearm is fully unloaded. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to disassemble the firearm into its main parts. After wiping down each part, inspect them closely to ensure no residue or fouling remains; if needed, reapply solvent and repeat the cleaning.

Choose a high-quality gun cleaning solvent and use a clean cloth or designated brush to apply the solvent to all internal and external surfaces of the barrel, receiver, and other metal parts. When all parts are clean and dry, apply a small amount of gun lubricant to moving parts and contact points to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation. For those in harsh environments, like waterfowl hunters, consider applying a thin coat of marine grease, RIG, or similar protective compound to metal parts before each hunt to repel water and prevent corrosion. Carefully reassemble the firearm following the manufacturer’s guidelines, making sure all components are securely in place.

For long-term storage, a protective layer of Renaissance Wax or similar product can prevent rust and preserve wood stocks from drying out. This added coating also guards against fingerprint marks.

Storage

Storage is also key, protecting against corrosion, mold, fire, theft, or unauthorized access. A quality gun safe or vault door provides dual protection for both security and environmental control. Avoid storing firearms in padded gun cases long-term, as padding can retain moisture and encourage rust. You will want to place your firearms in a secure and protected safe or vault.

Storage Accessories

Hunters storing firearms for extended periods should try to maintain a controlled environment within the gun safe, or room. Investing in a high-quality dehumidifier for a gun safe is a proactive measure that helps preserve the condition and performance of firearms, contributing to their longevity and maintaining their value. Humidity is a primary concern for firearm storage. The NRA recommends keeping safe humidity between 30% and 50%, with a temperature around 70°F. By controlling the moisture levels within the safe, gun owners can rest assured that their firearms are well-protected and ready for use whenever needed.

There are other accessories that can help you organize your safe. For instance, handgun hangers can help maximize safe space in a crowded environment. You can also get additional lighting options, hangers, and storage boxes to help organize your safe.

When the season is over for the year, and the bulk of your shooting is done, it’s important to set aside some time to clean your guns. Store them safely in a quality locking safe to ensure protection and for against unauthorized access, theft, and fire.
