in reply to: Hung up birds #2090244in reply to: 4th season kills? #2090756::
Went out last night do a little scouting on some public near my house, spotted a tom and hen. Swung around to intercept them, got set up and about 10 minutes later the hen came cruising through my spread but the tom must have veered off course while i was sneaking.
Saturday I plan to sit in my blind from sun up until dark, or until there is a bird on the dirt::As much as I hunt in western IA and the losess hills I have seen zero hog activity lately, But about 10 years ago on my folks property in monona county I did shoot a big ol sow while calling coyotes no ear tag but most definately not a true “wild” pig.
They are definately not a problem in Iowa… yet
in reply to: turkey decoy #2092310::I used to have something similar to what you are thinking. I skinned a jake that I had shot and then stitched the skin after it had been preserved onto an existing plastic decoy and it worked wonders until a stray cat got into my garage and had its way with it, but since then I have been using flambeau master series decoys and they have worked just as well so I do know if the effort is worth the rewards
in reply to: NW iowa turkey hunting EXTREME NOOB #2092557::There are a lot of turkeys around snyders bend but you have to be careful there becuase some of the park is actually in Nebraska and it is tough to know where is where, but there are a lot of birds back there. Also for public ground head south to the losess hills state forest around preparation canyon in southern monona county I have seen tons of birds around there this spring and it is huge

in reply to: evening turkey hunt #2093075::I would say it all depends on when you have been seeing birds in the area and then get there before that. I plan to be out by 5:30 but that is do to work and getting to my spot. I do agree that staying put and keeping the calls toa a minimum is a good idea. Try to get to a spot that is in their route to their roosting area or use an area that you have seen them working that time of day. Another thing is to stay patient and try to wait them out until dark even if you dont see anything, slip out with the cover of darkness just to not spook any for tomorows hunt( I assume you will be out in the morning, I know I will be!)

And Good Luck!in reply to: dang bobcats #2093110in reply to: A GOOD RIFLE SCOPE FOR SQUIRREL HUNTING #2093112in reply to: Hunting in the rain #2093500::They still do their thing in the rain, it is just a matter of how hard you want to hunt to get them. Last year 2nd season my buddy and I hunted the first day in the rain and we both bagged our birds, the second day it was 80 degrees and the sun was shining. Sounds like second season this year is going to be wet again but the birds still do what they do and I will be out there doing what I do.
in reply to: Fred McManus #2094467in reply to: turkey chokes??? #2094487::Agreed shoot it and figure out what works. I did have some problems shooting federals with the flite control wad out of my tight wad choke, which is a .650, then I switched loads(winchester supreme) and nearly doubled the amount of pellets on target at 40 yds. That wad might not work so well in a really tight choke.
in reply to: First time muzzle loader #2094649::I tried bore sighting it and it was pretty close I thought but like i said before most of it was probably me. And I did mark my ramrod when it was loaded and checked it carefully the few times i did shoot it. I plan on being overly careful with this gun since it is my first experience with BP. That first shot I was a little nervous and actually sat at the bench for about a minute trying to slow down my breathing and stop thinking before I pulled the trigger. anyways thanks for the help guys
ps I did go with an Optimain reply to: Dog in the boat for the first time. #2094683::My last lab, Motley, Loved boating and duck hunting, fishing was a different story he always thought he was retrieving whatever I was throwing. One day I was floating around snyders bend with a friend in the boat and motley and my friend had his leash and we were by some cat tails and there was a big grass carp along the weeds and the mot dog jumped in leash and all after the carp. he then drug our little boat around for a minute before he was tired enough to get back in.
