We fished before the tourney and were not having any luck into we ran into a very friendly couple guys of Hmong background. They were filling buckets while other were getting zilch. Go to lure was a white/wonderbread rattlespoon tipped with red spikes. Switched to that and started catching. We were on little lake in 7-9 FOW.

Wow, very sad. All of the guys in our group caught fish but small ones. My grandson did catch a 3/4lb perch an hour into the tourney, was at 147th with 5 minutes left, and ended at 160th. Not bad for his first trip there.

I have had my NWCO license for the last 12 years but seldom do any nuisance trapping anymore (95% bat proofing these days). Seems to me with current prices, lots of animals, it might not be a bad idea to get back into the trapping end of it more in the future, just a thought.

Sure I could always stop by with a little deer summer sausage, crackers and liquid refreshment. Cant go a year without at least a couple of Lloyds stories 😉

His is usually a little latter in the spring. Walleyes on Storm Lake are really taking off right now with lots of limits being caught by waders after tossing back 3X as many slots…

Fished Storm from shore this morning. East ramp by campground is wide open but no dock. South ramp at Bel Air beach still has ice from shore to about 100 feet out. The southwest marina is open but the channel has about 50-70 feet stretch of ice that should go out this weekend with any wind at all.

Dad and I entered this a week ago and were #5 at that time. Walleye fishing has been fantastic this winter if you like catching lots of 20-21.5 inch slot fish. Catching an occasional over slot but the slot fish far out number any keepers. Since the ice went out there have been a lot of nice eyes caught at the marina but it really slowed down 2 days ago with this latest cold spell. If you want to launch a boat the east ramp is open but no dock, the south ramp still has ice and the channel to the marina still has a 60 foot stretch of ice that should go out this weekend. Any questions give Josh a call at Gone Fish’in bait shop on Railroad street, he will do his best to put you on fish. 😉

I am sure its a safety thing but it seems a lot less safer pulling a couple people with a rope from a shack behind the wheeler or a sled. Hit the brakes and they are into the tires of the wheeler. Start-up was a zoo last year. 🙄

Can ride double on wheeler if its rated for 2 people and has the one up seat. Friend took wifes Artic Cat 700 last year. Was rated for 2 with extra foot pegs but forgot the one up seat and could only ride one. Friends I know got tickets on the ice last year for riding double.

We are leaving from Alta, Iowa at 6am Thursday the 26th and coming home on Sunday the 29th. We are taking 12 guys, 3 vehicles and an enclosed trailer for the gear. I believe this will be our 7th year in a row going. We used to rent motel rooms but we now rent a huge cabin that sleeps 15 right on a lake north of the tourney site. They said there wasn’t mush fishing going on that lake (Lower Cullen), but we went out in 40 foot and absolutely slaughtered the slab crappies and had a huge fish fry! Sparkie said it best…its like Ragbrai on ice. All kinds of vendors on the ice with street signs and 20,000 pre-drilled the night before. The first year we didn’t catch fish but since then we have figured out where to catch at least small fish and we all get on the leaderboard at least once before our names drop off. look forward to seeing you up there again Sparkie!

Storm Lake totally capped this morning. With this wind about 1/3 was open on the west side by 1am. The east side is capped from shore to the big island. Lots of ice got pushed to east side so first fishing this weekend will be rough travel…

Ran to Fleet and Farm in Ankeny on the 1st and bought 15 tickets myself. A few guys canceled so we are down to 10 now staying in a cabin on the lake that sleeps 15. Gonna be a blast like always!
