Has anyone used or have an opinion on the kids fishing pole that hides the string in the rod and comes out the top? Or are there other easy options out there for a 3 year old
Heck, just get your kid fishing. I’m pretty sure I had some mickey mouse pole to start. The old zebco types I remember. My mom still uses one.

I’m going to have to try that this year. I wish I had seen it last year before I pulled the plants before the first frost. Some of them had stems that were over 1.5″ diameter. All this gardening talk got me going so I ordered some Count Dracula pepper seeds last night and ill be starting some others this weekend.
I had to google Count Dracula peppers, those are cool!
How spicy are the count dracula’s? I have been getting what I call little spicy effers from menards for the past few years. Don’t even know their real name. Very spicy when I let them dry then grind them up for pepper flakes. I’m always open to new peppers.
They seem to be a novelty pepper only ranging from 8000-30000 shu, so basically between jalapeno and cayenne for heat. I’ve been smoking and dehydrating a lot of peppers lately and grinding them into powder. Most of it comes from ghost and scorpion peppers so it’s much hotter than these will be. I ordered these solely because they look to be something different. Not sure where you’re located but I could probably spare some mystery cherry pepper seeds along with some ghost or scorpions seeds.
I appreciate the gesture. I’ll find something. Got a Earl May gift card for Xmas so will have to check that out. Peppers and tomatoes I can do so many things with.

I’ve only been to BWW a handful of times……and I work literally YARDS from the one here in Cedar Rapids. Honestly, I can make better wings at home on my Weber Grill, and for a fraction of the cost of their overpriced food. I never like to drink when I go out to restaurants, not only is it expensive, but that means only one of us (my wife and I) can drink- the other has to be the DD. So I would rather stay home, grill a kick A** batch of wings, drink ice cold beer from my own fridge, and watch sports at an acceptable volume which facilitates conversation without shouting, haha. 😆
AMEN

Looking for anyone’s input on their favorite lake to fish up there in early summer. Taking my son, 8 on his first real fishing only trip up north, along with my uncle who has never been on any fishing trip. Going for fish 4 days, cant decide if I should drive the extra couple hours north of the border to get into some better fishing or stay in Minn. and maybe focus on panfish as well, looking at mid June trip. I know there are a lot of resorts and camps that are not on the internet, we are simply looking for clean and comfortable nothing fancy necessary, I want my son to get the feel of a fishing trip not a hotel. I known you all have your favorites if you would share that would be great. Thanks!
Devils Lake ND. Some of the best fishing I’ve ever had.
in reply to: Upriver or downriver of iowa falls.. #1562285in reply to: Scary ordeal. #1563948in reply to: fishing trip ideas #1563949As stated above, if you want to stain/finish it every few years then do that. Don’t want to put up with that much maintenance then power wash it when needed. Just don’t blast the life out of it. Wood is wood, some last longer than others, but eventually it will all need replaced. Personally, I think stains and the such are a waste of time and money.
in reply to: So are they done? #1566939in reply to: Smallmouth #1599460We used to wade the river around Ames throwing mepps spinners or smaller crank baits. Those smallies sure are fun. Haven’t done it in quite a while so I’m no help on what it is like right now. My best advice is go try it. Bring a little variety in lures. They should be trying to pack it on right now.

Saying the sandhills of Nebraska have less upland bird habitat than anywhere in Iowa might be the most incorrect thing I’ve ever heard or read. Really. I mean that, and I work with the public for a government agency dealing with natural resources. Read some ecology books. Please do. If anyone is curious, just look them up on google earth. You don’t need an education to see that. My 90 year old grandma would be able to see.
The raptors migrate. Like I said, read some books or go see it for yourself.
Pheasants aren’t native anyway. You should be getting worked up about other things in your state.
That is like next level dumb. SD and NE having less habitat than IA? You just haven’t been around or have the biggest rosy lenses that exist. Even with such lenses, I don’t get it. Like go drive around a bit.
I don’t know how many times I’ve tried to explain something like this to someone. It does get frustrating and I think I’ve learned to be more subtle about trying to explain it. Human population will not be going down anytime soon. So, either move to the big cities or take care of what little is left of the “natural” environment. People complaining about predators, hey, the more predators is almost always a sign that the whole local ecosystem is actually doing pretty good. They eat what you want to hunt, yes. Well, give them more room. If you are not seeing any predators then I’m going to bet there isn’t much to eat. Nature has a awesome system of correcting itself in a short amount of time. It just needs that opportunity that it rarely gets any more. (Pheasants really are an invasive species.)
in reply to: Local Guidance in Central Iowa? #1604835in reply to: Boss Lady had a good night #1605138in reply to: Red Tails and Pheasants #1606711Let’s get this straight. Pheasants are a non-native species. Iowa used to be prairie. We all know it is not that now. Invasive species almost always disrupt the balance of the ecosystem. Throw in Iowa, I think, is some kind of 0.001 percent prairie now what do you get? You get an introduced bird that makes the state some money and people like to complain about it. An introduced bird! What about the animals that should be living here? Hawks belong here. Quails. You can go on and on. Priorities people. Unfortunately, very unfortunately, it almost always comes down to politics. This is our world. Can we take care of it?
in reply to: Red Tails and Pheasants #1606754Here is an opinion. People suck. More people concludes to more suck. More people becomes less habitat. Less habitat means less animals that can survive. THAT INCLUDES PREDATORS. It’s all a natural process that we are ruining. Day by day. If anyone is looking for a reason why it is the way it is, look in the mirror. You can use all the studies and numbers you want, but it’s not going to get any better. Pessimistic……yes. It is just the way it has been going for decades.
