I never found the bigger perch last winter. During open water it’s smallmouth time at the Shell Rock river.

Right now 4 to 5 inches of ice on clear lake but some spots with less. The coming weeks cold weather forecast should bring plenty of ice by new years day. With how busy work / family is that will my 1st serious ice fishing this winter.

My gear for ice fishing is “old guy cheap” for the most part. My one expensive item is a helix 5 g2 ice pack to replace my old green box fishfinder. The shelters are 1st gen HT 2 person tent and 1 man flip over. Auger 10″ cobra, saw the same one at the old strikemaster museum in Big lake MN. Other auger 4″ lazer w/drill adaptor and B&D 1/2″ drill. Cheap folding seat, old poles and tipups that belong in a museum. Old Coleman lantern, but a nice big buddy heater. My cane is marked to measure the fish. This is why I started last year with the helix upgrading 1 thing a year. I love to fish & ice time is the best.

I have learned to avoid clear lake the summer weekends. My oldest is handicapped so there is no fast load for me even though do all the prep I can. It takes time after the boat is in the water to lift her from the wheelchair to her seat in the boat stow the wheelchair back in the SUV and go. So I just wait till after Labor Day to take the boat out. B4 I lived here I was up north and could always go to a lake that was not busy. Here do not have that choice and found it not worth the hassle.

We do fish on the boat landing dock but only weeknights and if a boat is coming or going we reel up and do what we can to help them.

Perch – There is a big difference between your situation and someone being inconsiderate. I can see why you might want to avoid the ramps on times like the 4th of july weekend, heck I avoid those crazy times too. But you shouldn’t feel any obligation to deny your family a chance to boat/fish on nice weekends. For example, when I see some old codgers hobbling around launching a boat I might roll my eyes, but instead of upsetting me, it makes me smile and feel good inside. I love to see people have opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

Grew. Up in Cass. There is a hook shaped bar west side near fox creek (stinky creek) that can kick out big eye 20ft o water. Further south down the west side is another bar that can be good. Deep weed edge jig for perch just use bigger bait to keep the little ones away

The days inn or super 8 are OK too and closer to the interstate. I used to live there if you want the best best burger in town go to Rappers downtown. If you like Italian try Angelina’s or Cafe Bella. D Michael Bee’s for steak and the Depot for Pizza.

Strikemaster …. I have a cobra 3000 strikemaster it is my first power auger and it is so old that the strikemaster folks have one on display in there museum. Have only been in Iowa 5yrs have spent most of my life north MN drilling holes in ice 🙂 the great thing is after all those years all I have ever done to it is change blades and I can still get them. Stopped by there place in Big Lake MN few years ago and asked to buy new blades and they asked if I had it with me up had a bunch of them listen to it run. What they had in there museum being still used seemed to make them proud. It has drilled many many holes and if my knees hold up will drill many more.

Buy quality take care of it and go fishing.

Was on the little lake out from landing by ventura lots of folks got yellows and small perch. They were shallower than me 6 to 10 feet o water. I was trying to find walleyes or big crappie no luck. Saturday will be out getting yellows. If you see an old dude with an HT flipover portable stop by and say hi.

Try a pause in the retrieve of the crank about where they are hitting and if that will not get it done try and speed up.

with the Jig pause and twitch and if that will not work try fast rip then pause

at lest your getting a bite and know the fish are there so do not give up
