not a trainer by any means, but i put sheds in yard while he was a pup and every once in awhile now and he has always smelled them and gone right to them. now he finds sheds in the woods quite regularly. prolly more just because of smell association but still seemed to work

i would say its pretty close. being you only have a 27 inch draw and all fps is based on 30 you can deduct 25-30 fps right off the bat. then depending on arrow weight and nocks and such you will either gain a few fps or lose a few fps. mine comes out to 298 in the site i use and chronos at 301

i feel deer are still way down from what most of us would like. we have more food than either of our northern bordering states and only carry half the herd they have. i hunt all over the state and there were some areas down south that had good numbers but in NE iowa i never saw more than 3 deer in one night. 7 years ago i couldve sat and picked out the biggest doe any evening plus had shots at others. they will rebound as long as we continue to monitor our kills ourselves. ive also met more than one person that has stated they dont bother to call in their harvests. im sure there is a formula the dnr uses to factor this in but i just wonder how many really call in every deer

you got to be joking. if you couldnt get a deer during the gun season thats just the breaks. ive heard and seen more mature bucks harvested this year than any of the previous 5. both during shotguna nd during bow. and for the comment about lets get the deer heard under control. wth- our numbers are still way down over the entire state. im sure the guys in western iowa want just that more deer harvested and even lower numbers. even the public i hunt in NE iowa doesnt even compare to 7-8 years ago. im all for leaving things the way they are or ending the second season shotgun. how bout that

well hypothetically you used your dogs to recover game even though that wasnt your hypothetical intent, it is what happened. so that would be illegal but in my book the ticket would be worth it, knowing you salvaged your downed animal and didnt let it go to waste.

i always keep the call in part at the house with the meat. other part is transportation tag forgetting it home and ive always left it on antlers so its recordable at taxi if he gets checked

i dont know about the daylight thing as its pretty much the same every year but each year is different as far as bucks shedding. as the past years have proven to me that if your rut is earlier than normal then they will shed earlier than normal. way back when i shotgun hunted we had multiple years where we saw and harvested bucks that had already shed 1 horn even had one year that the antlers pulled off on the way out. we have onl;y harvested 1 buck though during bow season that had shed but he had a broadhead in his shoulder and was physically impaired on that side.

dont even fret about it. i cut mine clear to top of brisket every time and taxi just sews them up not a problem at all. if you ever go out west they cut directly up center of back to base of skull when caping for mounts. this isnt something that will even show up when mounted

anything from a 243 to a 300 rum will do but think of it as what will you use it for besides deer. then choose accordingly. if you ever want to use it for grizz or moose then pick the 300 but if you just plan on deer and maybe yotes then a 243 or 25/06 is perfect. and any of the 243 and 25/06 or a 270 is plenty of gun for anything from elk down to yotes and black bears

glad to see this as well. hopefully some will come back to refurbish some of our wetlands. though im not sure its a very high priority of our dnr. ive volunteered to run the equiptment to help dig out some of our silted in and over grown with invasive species marshes but have never heard back from them.

for me antler size means nothing. i would like to harvest a 200+ just like everybody else but im not going to pass up any deer thats 4+ in age regardless of antler score. for me my best trophy to date is a doe that dressed out on a verified hog scale at 187lbs and was aged at 6 1/2.

i think you may have been taken. while i agree 50 is way to warm for deer to be hanging whether its inside or outside would also make a difference, but a few yrs ago i shot one in morning and dropped off at locker on the way home. it was in the 70s by noon and at 5pm they called to tell me my deer was rotten. not possible. deer was shot gutted and dropped off all within 2 hours. plus it was a buck and they somehow lost the 140ish rack it had so there are bad lockers out there that will rip yu off. i would refrain from waiting to butcher if over 40 degrees and find a different locker

this is a non winning discussion. i personally think its definately a big deer taken during muzzy in iowa. however i also saw a show a few years back that claimed they had just shot the state record elk in colorado and when the truth came out it wasnt even shot in colorado or was fair chase. when were dealing with shows there are way to many falsities to believe alot now days. and even some of our iowa based celebs are guilty of saying they shot it somewhere besides where it actually came from. i went but it wasnt good. when i pulled in parking lot there was a pair of guys there that were walking towards parking lot one ran down in bushes as soon as they saw me. then they said they were duck hunting and shot rails but didnt have no way to get them since they werent wearing waders and didnt have a dog. turned out they shot coots and GW had pulled in lot in meantime then they acted like i called him and got all indignant. GW said they were walking the grass at 715 and he knew they had at least 3 birds so i went duck hunting and just relaxed and took in the day. you just never know when the GWs are watching

well welcome to muzzle loading. triple seven pellets will be the easiest way to start shooting. 2 — 50 cal pellets is all you need . bullets i would suggest the powerbelts. i shot them for years and got plenty good accuracy with them and they are way easier to load than any saboted bullets that ive found. after you get accustomed to your new gun you can try saboted ones like the hornadys or barnes they will be harder to load after the first shot so keep a brass brush handy along with a bore patch wipe. you should get a bullet starter with sabot attachment also, and a sabot attachment for your ramrod, some breech plug grease and hoppes oil are also good investments for normal maintanance. you could also use bore butter to season the barrel. i like the 300 gr bullets but any thing 250-300 will be fine. i also keep a needle in my bag in case something gets lodged in the opening of breech plug. and pipe cleaners for cleaning out breech plug at the end of the day. im sure i forgot some stuff. goodluck and enjoy they can be alot of fun just to go shoot

its always a possibility to gewt a shed buck at any time as any of numerous sicknesses or injuries will cause them to shed early

clearing shooting lanes should be fine. ive done it many years after season was underway. just dont clear all vegitation just shooting lanes. and clear a entry and exit path about 3 ft wide and within a couple weeks the deer will use it also
