We went out on the Sioux last night near Canton and caught quite a few 1-2 pound cats. We werent able to reach any of the better holes because the river is extremely low. Unless you have a mud motor I’d stay off, shined up the prop pretty good. Thank God for stainless or I’d be buying a new one.

calling law enforcement and taking to small claims = criminal vs. civil. This is civil. Don’t call the cops, do the small claims thing.

I understand they named it as the fish passage project or whatever, but if the fish can get upstream the fishing will not be as good there. 250 grand+ seems like a hell of a lot of dough to drop to let fish get up toward Sioux Falls, where the fish are stopped again. Especially since SF lets raw sewage dump in there and I dont think too many fish that portion of river. I’m sure the canoers had a bit of an interest in this. Money could have been spent to do repairs as well if it was that dangerous. To each their own, but I feel the fishing is going to suffer there. I’ve talked to a few guys who have fished there quite a bit and they feel the same.

You aren’t joking Huntingirl; he had lots to add and great photos. However, if you were reading all posts objectively, he played a part in many of the long-standing feuds he had. Basically, as long as you all agreed with his opinion, he was/is a great resource for this site. If you didn’t agree, you were wrong. 🙄
That is sidetracked from the original story though. I am still surprised it’s such big news when a big cat is spotted in Iowa. Granted, I’ve never seen one here, but we all know they inhabit the state to some degree (which is debatable).

They ran an article on a Sioux Falls website last year stating that swimming pools are popular in the summer when it’s hot out. When the news is slow they will write about belly button lint if they feel like it.

I was just thinking what would that be worth. I doubt there were too many sold…seems expensive at 6 bucks back then. They also looked like they would be easy to break.

If you’re just looking for an inexpensive setup for channel cats, look at the Shakespeare Tiger combo at Walmart for 20 bucks. I’ve kicked the crap outa mine for 12 years and it’s still goin.

A guy like this is gonna shove people on the fence over to the left side. If that’s the kind of guy making a fight for gun rights, we’re screwed. I’ll bet you that store has a no gun policy within a week now.

    Keehawk,
My dad used to be the park director that managed that park for 25 years until he passed away. I went to HS just south of there. It’s pretty deep (25ish) in the middle. I never catfished it myself. Dad used to talk to a couple older gentlemen that fished it several years ago. They were catfishing, and claimed they kept getting into fish that were too big to get in with the tackle they had. Otherwise I never heard of anyone in the area catfishing it. I have seen some pro bass guys come through now and then though. It’s definitely worth a shot, and if all else fails, drive 5 miles to the Linn Grove Dam.

You’ll wanna stick to the area near Akron and south. There are more bends and deeper holes down that way. Also a lot of logjams. The river is low right now, but you should be able to get around with your flatbottom. You can still expect to find holes in the 12-14 foot range, even with the water low. I haven’t fished flatheads on the Sioux, but I know that they do pull plenty out in that area. I do know that a 15 pound channel isn’t uncommon. FYI if you wait one more weekend, there is a cat tourney called the Skilly Slam thats based out of Akron. It goes from noon to noon on the 14th to 15th. Guy that runs it told me there was 115 signd up last year and he expects the same this year. Good luck.

Yankton SD. There are some small cabins right on the lake. There is also a small resort/motel thats on the lake. I dont think either would cost too much, and the view there is hard to beat. Might have to get reservations in soon though, they fill up quick. I used to live in Yankton and would recommend it to anyone looking to get away for a week or so.

I normally jig with a minnow by hooking it through the lips. Is that the best way to jig with the GULP minnow or do u push the hook through the head and out the back similar to a twister? Seems they would last longer that way but may not have as good as action?

The big schools were the smaller ones, probably 2-3 pounds. I did snag one that was probably in the 15-20 pound range.
