I have never turkey hunted and would really like to go this year, but don’t know of a spot, like the OP. I’m 15 min East of Marion and am willing to travel far.

Not intended to hijack the OP’s post, but did anyone else watch the show about cats the other night about how cats evolved and are about the most versatile and adaptable species on the planet? They are literally everywhere. It was a very interesting and educational show.

I saw it, very good. Couldn’t believe the guy that was pals with the lion pride.
I would hazard a guess that he doesn’t guide Lion hunts in S. Africa.

I only have public land to squirrel hunt at this time and I’m always afraid I’m going to blow someone’s bow hunt this early. I know I have the same right to the land as the bow hunters, but I feel bad when I jump deer and then see a tree stand.

Reviving an old thread, but I’d like some opinions on the Caldwell Ballistic Precision Chronograph.

I want to work up a .44 mag load for deer season and think a chronograph would help.

Where is there a shoot in Iowa? I tried contatcing the national organizations for pin shooting(forget the name) about Iowa clubs and heard nothing.

Nice. Have you had to play with the powder charge to get that group? I’ve heard each muzzleloader tends to like a particular charge amount. I haven’t run enough variants though mine as I should, but last time I had it out a few years back I got a three shot group at 100 yards under 3/4″ from a bench rest. That’s pretty damn good IMHO. However, I don’t have that projectile anymore, so will probably need to work up a new load.

Old gas? That always is a problem with seasonal and especially 2 stroke motors.

Gloves are important too to hide the flash of your hands. I have a camo head net I use when it is warmer, as most face masks are the winter type. It was made for turkey hunters. Use it for doves also.

Got my first one this year. Said it was banded near North Liberty and I shot it A few miles North of Lisbon. The report said it was a male hatched in 2014 or earlier.

I was thinking about going, but I’m not that experienced of a duck hunter and the guy that I’ve gone with before is fishing in MN. I’m worried that I might shoot a female wood duck by mistake in the heat of the moment if I was by myself.

I always liked those, probably the best web weavers around here. I used to love catching bugs and throwing them in the web to watch the spider wrap them up when I was a kid. Seemed to really like being among the tomatoes.

Great photos, what kind of camera do you have? Using the macro setting?

How do you tell the sex on them?

You could try the outflow right below the Coralville dam. It isn’t too far away and there are some big carp there. It will probably be pretty busy over the holiday though.

Limited out by 8am, first time I’ve hit the limit ever. There were four of us and two other groups totaling four more guys and they all hit it too. Going to try tomorrow, but don’t expect anything like today. Big group of six hunters moved in as we were leaving.

Heard a bunch of quail whistling all around before the shooting got really hot. Been a long time since I’ve heard that.

Landlord wont let me shoot the giant Eurasian collard ones on the property here. 🙁 Four were flying around as I got home. They taunt me.

They like bare dirt, either near food plots or water.

I have two I want to scout before Thursday, so I’m going to call the DNR Monday. If I remember I will post what I find out.

I’ve never had them, can you describe their taste at all? I know that can be subjective.

    Where are they found?

A comment wouldn’t show up on the main page with all of the listings.

I was at my farm this past weekend and was pleased to run into two separate coveys and I suspect there are more than what I did see. I heard quail whistling many times, just about whenever I didn’t have the tractor running..

What part of Iowa is your farm? Not looking for specifics, just an rough idea of the region, or which county if you’d like.

The background check for a carry permit is not the same as NICS. It is supposed to be more involved. If it was just the NICS you wouldn’t have to wait several weeks for the permit.
