Guys, sadly losers like this comprise the majority of our college and university staff in our state. I went to the much smaller Buena Vista University and can tell you that even in a small private university, people who think like this make up the majority of the faculty, not the minority. I always enjoy how I should accept the homosexual lifestyle due to the belief that it is the way someone was born, yet criticism of my faith is widely accepted in society, even though I consider it to be who I am and how I was born. I would agree that there are definitely some rural areas of Iowa that even I as a lifelong Iowan, hunter, and fisherman laugh at and am blown away by how much some seem to have spent their entire lives away from civilization, but as was mentioned before, I love that about Iowa. The funny part is that this genius talks about how youth who gain degrees in Iowa pretty much all leave to pursue a more civilized lifestyle. My brother and I couldn’t be more the opposite. We both grew up in a very affluent lifestyle in one of Iowa’s larger cities and fished, but shooting a sparrow with a pellet gun was about as redneck as we ever got. We are now both bowhunters/gun collectors/reloaders/fisherman/bowfisherman/mushroom hunters/and probably many other things I can’t even think of right now. Our other brother moved to the Chicago suburbs and works downtown as a bond salesman. He pretty much thinks his two brothers are two of the biggest hillbillies that walk the earth, which we intentionally embellish when he is around. Overall, I look at our brother’s lifestyle that includes well over double our salaries combined and everything that goes with that, and I see a guy and his family that are so stressed out trying to “live the life” that they rarely truly appreciate anything in life. I bought my 4 year old a bow for Christmas this year, and I guarantee you that they will think that is highly inappropriate. Luckily they still vote conservative, but it doesn’t matter much being that they live in the Socialist state of Illinois.

I can’t believe the guy stuck around and actually raised his family in such a” God forsaken place. (Oops I don’t think he believes there is a God )” backasswards sewer pit of a state. If it is as bad as he claims maybe we should report him to child protective services for allowing his son to live here.

I don’t even know where to begin with this… my blood pressure is elevated a bit right now. This fellow sure does a fine job of finding “facts” to fit his preconceived notions. Hate to have the truth interfere with a good story.

Steve Bloom was my wife’s adviser in college. He is a shameless self-promoter who only sees things that reinforce his worldview. This article is nothing more than a series of tired stereotypes; some true, more untrue.

Nater3, I went to the University of Iowa and the majority of my professors loved living in Iowa, and they had nothing but good things to say about it. Your stereotypical generalization about university professors is as broad and inaccurate as any of Prof. Blooms laughable inaccurate oversimplified characterizations.

You may need to post a link to his e mail since most of us are far too under educated to do this on our own! 😉

FYI…Happy Holidays is derived from Happy Holy Days. So all the bums that don’t want to wish me a Merry Christmas, thanks for wishing me a Happy Holy Day! You would think this genius professor would know that, but obviously he has not done any real research on the matter much like his assessment of Iowa.

Iowa is, without a doubt, the greatest state in the US. If’n he can’t see that, he’s never REALLY experienced it. It’s his loss. (But I’d kinda like to punch him too)

Well I for one dont feel like just rolling over to this arse hole so I sent him an e mail telling him how I felt about his article! 👿

    My Letter…

    Mr. Bloom,

I just finished reading your article posted in The Atlantic, concerning life in Iowa and the people that live here. Not that it matters to you, I am sure, but I find it offensive and lacking factual content. And I am left with only one question. Why on earth did you stay here and raise a family for 20 years??? I am sure your family has been completely traumatized by their experience here in Iowa!

Do you really feel you did all of the people in this state justice with your fictional writing? Did you do anything to help them? In your 20 years what have you done to try to make these communities a better place? Or was it just a way to draw a salary and meet your needs? I often wonder if our young aren’t leaving the state because of over blown dreams planted in their head by others. The grass is always greener right?

I too left this great state at a young age. To join the military and serve my country, and further my education, as my family was unable to pay my way. I married; we had children, and moved back to my home town here in Iowa. There has never been a day that either of us has ever regretted that decision.
Now my grandchildren are being raised in the very same fashion.

I have met people from all over the world and believe some of the hardest working and friendly people of all come from right here in Iowa. So I am left wondering what little slice of heaven you called home prior to coming to Iowa.

In closing I would simply say, please leave. You serve no purpose in our little world. You are obviously not happy nor are we with you here so just forget it ever happened and move on. You know nothing of what it is to be from Iowa and you never will.

    Sincerely,

    Todd Mc Granahan

I can’t disagree with a lot of what he says. But I like it that way. If he don’t, get the ____ out or don’t complain. Just my opinion.
Didn’t hear him complain once about the fat salary he’s getting here, though.

Stephen Bloom made $105,593 fy 11 working for the state of Iowa, I say fire him! He bit the hand that feeds him!

He probably has tenure and can’t be fired.

Ever been to Montana or Colorado? I like Iowa too, born and raised, but I don’t think I would go that far! 😛

I would comment on this but my mother always told me to have compassion for those less fortunate people with physical/mental disabilities. 😉

A local t shirt shop here has already come up with an idea for t shirts they will be printing. Im guessing there will be alot of students who wear these if he decides to continue teaching here.
